KOTA KINABALU: The Customs team who came under heavy gunfire in waters off Pulau Mataking Semporna, close to the Philippines border on Friday (Dec 20) evening were conducting an anti-smuggling operation prior to the incident.
Eastern Sabah Security Command commander Datuk Hazani Ghazali said the Customs officials were gathering intelligence on smugglers prior to the incident at 5.20pm.
"They were also conducting patrols along the area when the shooting occurred," he said when contacted on Saturday , without giving further details.Hazani said they were still working with the various security agencies to find out the motive behind and those responsible for the shooting.It is learnt that a group of armed men fired over 40 shots at the vessel.
