Matildas defender Ellie Carpenter has candidly spoken about social media abuse she received in the aftermath of Australia’s exit from the FIFA Women’s World Cup earlier this year.

The 23-year-old was integral in the Matildas march to the semi-final but quickly became a target after a crucial error which handed England the match-winning goal that ended Australia’s campaign.

Ellie Carpenter, 23, was the subject of vile online abuse after the Matildas' Women's World Cup exit. Picture: Catherine Ivill/Getty Images The young star spoke to the media on Wednesday ahead of the Matildas' Olympic qualifiers insisting it did not impact her experience at the World Cup.“For me, it doesn’t really affect me at all. I do a job for my team and myself. It is everywhere these days and that just shows that the bigger you are or the bigger you get, the more criticism you get.

However, Carpenter admitted it was unfortunate the Matildas' exponential growth in support meant it was likely the abuse would continue.“Obviously it’s a problem and I know a lot of people are trying to make apps and platforms to try and stop abuse and things like that, so that’s good that people are aware of it and are trying to change it.”England and Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has been a target of criticism and racial abuse online.
