Matildas star Ellie Carpenter has opened up for the first time on the ugly abuse she has copped on social media.

Carpenter became public enemy number one after Australia’s World Cup run came to an end at the hands of England., 23, after the Aussie star had a moment to forget, which handed England what proved to be their game-winning goal.Needing to clear it, Carpenter appeared to have two air swings at the ball before overrunning the bouncing ball, allowing the England striker to reinstate the Lionesses lead minutes after Sam Kerr’s stunning strike.

Carpenter said online abuse is now part and parcel of being a professional athlete in this day and age and that she has learnt to block it out.
