An elderly Malaysian man and his Thai companion were among seven couples arrested during a Syariah law enforcement operation in Melaka, Malaysia, on New Year's Eve. The operation, conducted by the Melaka Islamic Religious Department (JAIM), involved the inspection of 17 premises in Melaka and Alor Gajah. The couple, aged 60 and 42 respectively, were found in a hotel room and claimed to be celebrating the New Year and watching fireworks before deciding to stay overnight due to fatigue and late hour.
