PUTRAJAYA: Educationists Dong Zong, Jiao Zong and several other Chinese and Tamil non-government organisations have met with Education Ministry deputy director-general Dr Habibah Abdul Rahim over the Jawi calligraphy issue.
About a dozen of them representing some 20 groups in total went to the ministry at 2pm Thursday and left close to an hour later."It was done in a friendly manner, and we were able to raise our concerns regarding the implementation of Jawi calligraphy in schools.“We just want to say that we are not against Jawi calligraphy. We are only concerned about the way it is being implemented in our education system.
“We hope the ministry will have a dialogue with Chinese and Tamil educationist groups to discuss this matter further, ” said Jiao Zong general-secretary Tan Cheng Suan. On the rally organised by Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Se-Malaysia on Wednesday to call for the abolition of Dong Zong, Tan said people were free to express their opinion."It is up to the police or authorities to take action if we did anything wrong, ” said Tan.
Gamis held a protest march in Kuala Lumpur on New Year’s Day, calling for Dong Zong to be abolished after the latter voiced concerns over the implementation of Jawi calligraphy in schools.
