A single test that determines your risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next five years, is at risk itself.

The Heart Foundation and research institutions dedicated to the cardiac health of the nation are running a campaign to ensure this test continues to be federally funded through Medicare in the coming budget. But the Australian Medical Association and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners are not supporting the campaign. Rather than focus on a single disease, they want the funds redirected into broader preventative health.

Anxiety is building among its advocates who went to Canberra to plead their case but received no assurances about extending its funding.asked about its future, there was no confirmation, but there was an indication. A government spokesman said, “the Albanese government strongly backs the HHC” and an extension is being “considered” as part of the budget process.

While the GPs make a fair point, Professor Stephen Nicholls, president of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, says broad strategies used in the past did not move the dial.“Heart disease remained the big killer and the system needed something else. It’s about creating initiatives that are fit for purpose and for our communities.”

“It’s a shame we haven’t been able to bring the GPs along with us. In other parts of the world, cardiovascular prevention is looked after by cardiologists. Maybe cardiologists ought to have access to the HCC rebate too.“ The Victor Chang is one of eight heart health groups strongly advocating for HHC to be made permanent.By the expiry date, Australians are on track to pass the original target of 450,000 HHC tests.
