PETALING JAYA: Four transit quarantine centres will be set up in Sabah in a move to control the rising number of Covid-19 cases among illegal migrants.
Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the Sabah National Security Council had proposed the setting-up of the transit quarantine centres for new detainees before transferring them to deportation centres if confirmed to be Covid-19 negative.
"The Menggatal Community Hall and Pekan Kinarut Community Hall in Kota Kinabalu, the Sibuga Hall in Batu 5 Sandakan and Sri Gum Gum Hall in Batu 16 Sandakan will be used as transit quarantine centers, ” said Ismail. He added at a Facebook press conference on Saturday that those who tested positive would be sent to hospital for treatment, and those who tested negative would be placed under mandatory quarantine for 14 days before being sent to a deportation centre.
Ismail also said that the Armed Forces had agreed to activate the Military Field Hospital in Tawau to treat non-Covid-19 cases, including maternity, trauma and emergency surgeries in viewThe field hospital boasts 100 beds, five specialists, and eight medical officers, among others. He added that the Royal Malaysia Air Force would also provide daily flights catering to the Health Ministry's logistical needs, including transporting medical personnel and that these flights would also transport swab samples, as Sabah's capacity to carry out mass testing was limited.
