Takeaways from the University of Houston’s victory over East Carolina on Saturday.
Picked to win the AAC in the preseason and challenge for a New Year’s Six bowl, the Cougars will get neither. While still mathematically alive in the AAC race, it’s a longshot: the Cougars must hope for a three-way tie for second with Cincinnati and Central Florida and finish higher in the computer rankings.
“Hopefully we finish it off with a win to finish 8-4, 6-2 in the league, which is respectable,” coach Dana Holgorsen said. “It’s not what we wanted. It’s not where we’re at. But with all the preseason expectations — which are not these kids’ fault — but the preseason expectations, we didn’t know who we were. That was based on last year and having a stud quarterback coming back.”
“I give our coaches credit because we changed things,” Holgorsen said. “Because who we were defensively last year, who we were at the beginning of the year, we were not able to do that with seven starters down at key positions. You put other guys in there they ain’t ready to do what those other guys were able to do.
Tune landed awkwardly on the non-throwing shoulder on a 5-yard run near the goal line. He returned to begin the second half and threw for 435 yards and four touchdowns.“It’s a sore shoulder,” Holgorsen said after the game. “Not a season-ending, surgical-type deal. He’s a tough kid and can play through that.”RB by committee
