Cougars' defense puts on best performance of season in rout
HOUSTON, TX NOV 12: Houston Cougars cheer squad runs team flags after a scored touchdown in the second quarter during the college football game between the Temple Owls and Houston Cougars at TDECU Stadium in Houston, Texas.GREENVILLE, N.C. — Houston’s much-maligned defense has dealt with late-game collapses, allowed a school record for points in another game and has watched several starters miss significant time due to injuries.
The Cougars put together their most complete game of the season, jumping out to a 28-point lead and holding ECU to a field goal that came midway through the third quarter. Ahlers was under constant pressure from UH’s defensive front, and the Cougars never allowed ECU’s playmakers of running back Keaton Mitchell and wide receivers Isaiah Winstead and C.J. Johnson to do any damage.
ECU was 1-for-7 on third-down attempts and 0-for-2 on fourth down in the first half. The Pirates entered the game among the nation’s best on third down, converting nearly 48 percent. ECU had three big plays for 101 yards in the first half. The other 27 plays accounted for 66 yards, an average of 2.4 yards per play.
