We chat with WEIRDTheAlYankovicStory composers leobirenberg & zachrobinson about collaborating with director Eric Appel and Al Yankovic himself to bring heart & humor to an unforgettable origin story:
Warning: Spoilers for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. The imminent Roku original movie Weird: The Al Yankovic Story may have roots that date back to 2013, but the unique brand of comedy on display in the film is just what audiences in 2022 need. When a trailer for the at-the-time fictional movie dropped on Funny or Die, viewers responded enthusiastically to the satirical take on the beloved parody singer's backstory.
Leo Birenberg: Zach and I both apprenticed, assisted this composer named Christophe Beck, who is big and famous and does a lot of stuff. I would say his first claim to fame was Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but he is one of the top call guys for big studio movies in town. Zach and I were both fortunate enough to work there, and that's where we met. In the trenches, making coffees, and eventually doing music stuff. We were there during this kind of golden era run.
I know you both studied composition. Are there areas where one of you excels, or can you both just do everything? Zach Robinson: It's a really keen observation, because we feel the same way. We say this all the time, where we approach both the score for Cobra Kai and for Weird with utter sincerity. I think with Weird, it's especially so, because our direction really was to play it as straight as possible. The movie is a parody, but we're in on the parody. The score is not telling you to laugh, "Ha, ha, ha," at point A, point B, point C.
Zach Robinson: The end of the movie, Al's speech, was the first thing we wrote. And that was our presentation to Eric [Appel]. Like, "This is our theme for the movie, and this is the style," and it was like our thesis. He was like, "Great. You did it." From there, it was easy for us to kind of propagate it. I love - it's a small one, but I kind of love the epiphany moment. With "My Bologna". It's my favorite part of the whole thing.
