Defensive-minded Red Raiders adopt toughness from Adams, a former boxer

As Texas Tech basketball coach Mark Adams stood outside an NCAA Tournament interview tent Saturday at Viejas Arena, a question caused a smile to creep toward each ear.

The Red Raiders lead the nation in defensive efficiency, according to respected metrics-guy Ken Pomeroy. “… I had no idea what I was getting myself into. But coach Adams, what I heard even before I got to Texas Tech was, he was the guru of defense.” “My dad still holds the record for most consecutive wins,” Adams said. “I lost in the semifinals on a split decision. I had under 20 fights and I was fighting guys with 200, 300 fights because I had such a great coach.

“So many of our players came from humble beginnings and they’ve had some difficult times even getting here,” said Adams, in his first season after Chris Beard left for Texas. “There’s so many great stories of these guys and how people gave up on them. They didn’t give up on themselves. The scary part, beyond a defense that causes so many to wilt: The Red Raiders added record-setting offenseTexas Tech, despite a scoring offense ranked No. 142 nationally, broke its own record for NCAA Tournament points in the 97-62 rout. It was the most points scored during a tournament game at Viejas, producing the most field goals and highest margin of victory in the building’s big-dance history.
