Column: Ukrainian in war-torn Kharkiv sends hopeful message [Breaking]

“It’s scary every time I message him,” says National City businessman Ryan Garcia, referring to his IT consultant who lives in Ukraine. “He’s in hiding. Every day is a different story.”

As time permits, he and Garcia are collaborating on a project to design and sell T-shirts online as a fundraiser for the Ukrainian military.Nessonov created several T-shirt logo designs, and Garcia, who owns G3 Printing, has chosen two, one bearing the Ukraine symbol and the words: “Solidarity with Ukraine,” and another that includes a sinking ship carrying the Kremlin and the words: “Stop Russia.

But first things first. Nessonov has had a few distractions. When I spoke with him late Thursday, he had visited a farmer’s market in Kharkiv earlier that day where he was able to buy carrots, onions and fruit. He also filled his car’s gas tank. “Shops and gas stations are working from time to time, however, there are enormous lines, sometimes you have to wait for three hours to refuel.” He made his purchases at a smaller community market at 7 a.m. when lines were fairly short.

“Our success in this war depends on the military, and they are being supported by local farmers and people like me who give them food. Garcia offered to open his home to his Ukrainian friend if he evacuates, but Nessonov is staying. “I’m used to working now in these conditions, so I will continue working,” he says. He currently is involved in database design and engineering for a New York start-up company, although he’s aware that conditions could change on short notice.
