A parade in Muar, Malaysia, featuring a replica dragon went viral on social media after the presence of Chinese flags attached to the replica sparked controversy. A TikTok video by user @21fadhlan captured the parade, which was part of a program commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Muar Tiong Hua Association. The video, which garnered significant attention online, raised questions about the motive behind displaying the Chinese flags during the event.
The Muar District Police (PDRM) confirmed receiving a report regarding the incident on January 18, the day of the parade. PDRM stated that the celebration, which commenced at 6:10 PM, included lion dances and a procession featuring a dragon replica, claimed to be the longest in Malaysia. While the replica displayed Chinese flags on one side, the PDRM also noted that Malaysian flags, the Jalur Gemilang, were prominently featured on the right side. As of January 20, PDRM has summoned the event organizers and witnesses to assist in their investigation. The case is being scrutinized under several legal provisions, including Section 505(B) of the Penal Code, Section 6(2) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, and Section 3(1) of the National Emblems (Control of Display) Act 1949. If found guilty, the organizers could face imprisonment for up to three years and a fine of up to RM11,000. Muar's District Chief Police, Raiz Mukhliz, urged the public to refrain from speculation while the investigation is underway.
