BEIJING: Chinese state media said on Saturday (Jan 4) that the country had replaced its top envoy to Hong Kong, the most significant personnel change since democracy protests broke out in the city last year.

BEIJING: Chinese state media said on Saturday that the country had replaced its top envoy to Hong Kong - Wang Zhimin , the most significant personnel change since democracy protests broke out in the city last year."Wang Zhimin has been dismissed from his position as head of the Liaison Office" for Hong Kong affairs and was replaced by Luo Huining, state broadcaster CCTV said, without giving details.

After democrats won the District Council election by a landslide last month, a Reuters report cited an unnamed Chinese official as saying that Sai Wan’s Liaison Office had misjudged the situation in the city and its chief, Wang, may be replaced. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the report was false. But when meeting press at a seminar discussing the 20th anniversary of Macau’s implementation of the Basic Law, Wang sought to explain that he and the China Liaison Office team will stay put.

The demonstration was first triggered by a proposal to allow extraditions to mainland China. It has morphed into a larger revolt for democratic freedom and against China's control over the semi-autonomous city. - Agencies
