A charity group in Penang distributed angpow (red packets) to 2,000 needy senior citizens and 13 charitable homes, raising funds through their annual food fair.

An elderly woman, Lee Wai Kin, 74, was among 2,000 senior citizens who gathered to receive angpow (red packets) from a charity group. Lee expressed worry over her unusually high water bill of RM61, hoping the angpow would help settle it. The Star's chief photographer, KT Goh, later contributed to cover Lee's water bill.

Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society Penang distributed RM50,000 in angpow to the B40 senior citizens and RM195,000 to 13 charitable homes, raised through their Harmony Charity Food Fair 2024. Society president Datuk Sim Ah Chye emphasized the long-standing tradition of giving back to society by honoring senior citizens during Chinese New Year. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow praised the event as a reflection of shared values of compassion, generosity and commitment to uplifting those in need
