Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, representing the Holy See, emphasized the need for open dialogue and mutual respect between people of different faiths to combat growing secularism and religious suspicion.

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle stressed the urgent need for dialogue and fraternity to counteract the growing suspicion towards religion in an increasingly secular world. Addressing the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity ceremony in Abu Dhabi, he emphasized that the only antidote to this trend is genuine encounter and dialogue, characterized by friendship and respect between individuals from diverse religious backgrounds.

The Zayed Award was established in 2019 following the signing of the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together by Pope Francis and Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb. Representing the Holy See six years later, Cardinal Tagle reaffirmed the Church's unwavering commitment to fostering interfaith friendships, underscoring their paramount importance in an interconnected world. 'Since, on the one hand, the world has become 'smaller' than ever before, and, on the other, because the phenomenon of migration has increased contact between persons and communities from various traditions, cultures, and religions,' he explained to attendees at the Abrahamic Family House, a symbolic structure inspired by the 2019 document. He pointed out the challenges of coexistence in many parts of the world where political and economic interests exploit cultural and religious differences, exacerbating past conflicts and fostering an atmosphere of distrust and fear. He called for dialogue as a vital tool for unity, asserting: 'Indeed, whenever we take that route, the path outlined by the Document on Human Fraternity, we become ever more authentically human.'In societies where religion is frequently marginalized, Cardinal Tagle cautioned against excluding faith from public life. 'Religion is regarded as something useless or even dangerous, and it is often believed that coexistence is only possible if people relegate their religious affiliation to the purely private sphere or meet in 'neutral' spaces, devoid of any reference to the transcendent,' he stated. He stressed the importance of respecting all beliefs while remaining steadfast in one's own convictions: 'It is impossible to conceive of fraternity as being 'born in a laboratory.' Naturally, it is essential that everyone respects the sincere convictions of others, including unbelievers, but we must have the courage and patience to do so by holding true to who we are and what we believe.' In his concluding remarks, he emphasized that upholding and affirming religious freedom in all its aspects is crucial for fostering global peace and harmonious coexistence

Hong Kong Cardinal Calls for End to Food Waste, Linking It to Human RightsHong Kong Cardinal Calls for End to Food Waste, Linking It to Human RightsCardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun of Hong Kong has urged people to stop wasting food, arguing that it aligns with respecting human rights and caring for God’s creation. He wrote an article about the dignity of food based on his observations at several Christmas dinners, noting how much food went uneaten at these large events. He posed the question, 'Does food have rights?' just as human rights, animal rights, children’s rights, consumer rights, and patient rights exist. He believes that for Christians, rights stem from the understanding that God is the creator of all life, humans are made in God’s image, and their dignity comes from God’s love. Zen emphasizes that privilege comes with responsibility, and we are called to care for God’s creation. He warns that irresponsible consumption, especially of food, will ultimately harm ourselves and the sustainability of our ecosystem, further exacerbating inequalities.
