The Canadian Ministry of Health reports nearly 50,000 opioid overdose deaths since 2016, with fentanyl becoming the primary cause. Canada is now a net exporter of fentanyl, drawing attention from US President-elect Donald Trump.
Nearly 50,000 Canadians have died from opioid overdose s since January 2016 to June of this year, with fentanyl increasingly becoming the primary cause of death. According to the Canadian Ministry of Health , 49,105 opioid overdose deaths have been recorded over the nearly eight-year period. Statistics show fentanyl is involved in 79 percent of total opioid-related deaths so far this year, a 39 percent increase since 2016.
Canadian authorities acknowledge a significant rise in domestic fentanyl production, with seizures of the drug in the United States, Australia, and several other countries indicating that local fentanyl production has surpassed demand. This has led to Canada becoming a net exporter of fentanyl, according to the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. However, experts do not believe fentanyl from Canada is a major contributor to the US market. The ministry's report also states that, as of this year, an average of 21 people die every day from opioid overdoses, with 72 percent of them being male. Although these figures show a slight decrease compared to the same period in 2023, the ministry warns that the data is preliminary and subject to change. The fentanyl phenomenon in Canada has also drawn attention from US president-elect Donald Trump, who cited the issue as a reason to impose hefty tariffs on imports from Canada. Trump accused Ottawa of failing to address the flow of fentanyl into the US and announced a 25 percent tariff that will remain in place until Canadian authorities take action against the problem. -AGENC
