Winless Notre Dame opens as an 11-point favorite over undefeated Cal, which is hitting the road for the first time in 2022.
The Irish are winless in coach Marcus Freeman’s three games since taking over last December in place of Brian Kelly, who left to become coach at LSU. Freeman is the first Notre Dame coach to begin his tenure 0-3 . . . The Irish began the season ranked No. 5 in the AP Top 25 and dropped to No. 8 after a 21-10 opening loss to No. 2 Ohio State. After losing 26-21 to 20.
The Irish have four players projected by USA Today to be first-round NFL draft picks in 2023: tight end Michael Mayer at No. 18, edge rusher Isaiah Foskey at No. 19, safety Brandon Joseph at No. 24 and offensive lineman Jarrett Patterson at No. 31.Cal committed 18 turnovers in its four losses to Notre Dame from 1959 through ’67. That’s more than the total number of turnovers the Bears have since the start of the 2021 season . . .
