One Piece season 1 goes to great lengths to show how Shanks impacts Luffy D. Monkey's journey to become "King of the Pirates," and it makes it crystal clear that Luffy idolizes the man.
Buggy Claims That Shanks Betrayed Him In Netflix's One Piece While interrogating Luffy in One Piece episode 2, Buggy claims that Shanks betrayed him. In fact, he tries to evoke Luffy's sympathy, telling the Straw Hat Pirate that Shanks left him behind, too. It's meant to strike a chord with Luffy, but Buggy's approach ultimately fails. Luffy doesn't feel the same resentment toward Shanks that Buggy does, and he shows little interest in Buggy's history with the other man.
In the source material, Buggy tries to steal a Devil Fruit from the Roger Pirates, which he intends to sell for enough money to start his own crew. When Shanks nearly catches him with it, Buggy stuffs the fruit in his mouth. Because Shanks leaves and suddenly returns, Buggy swallows the Devil Fruit, rendering him unable to profit off it. He also can't traverse the seas for treasure, as the Devil Fruit makes him incapable of swimming.
