Phillips steals two bases, scores a run, drives in a run and makes a spectacular catch in a 3-2 win, while Canning gives up two runs in five innings in his first start since July 2, 2021.
ANAHEIM — Griffin Canning hadn’t pitched in nearly two years and Brett Phillips hadn’t started a game since last year.
Canning gave up two runs in five innings in his first start since July 2, 2021. He had been dealing with a stress reaction in his low back ever since. Phillips had not started any of the first 11 games, and he’d batted just once. He finally got an opportunity on Wednesday because Shohei Ohtani was off and Mike Trout started at DH, allowing Phillips to play center field.
