Following the deadly Jeju Air crash, speculation about a bird strike as a contributing factor has led to online harassment of a bird-focused YouTuber.

With a bird strike the subject of public speculation as one of the possible causes of the Jeju Air crash on Sunday (Dec 29) that claimed 179 lives, a YouTuber specialising in bird-related content has found himself in hot water. The channel with 490,000 subscribers,'Bird Enthusiast,' has seen a deluge of anti-bird comments, including'Birds caused people to die.” While experts are skeptical that the bird strike was the sole cause of the crash, an investigation is ongoing.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport confirmed that the plane received a bird strike warning from the airport's control tower minutes before colliding with the perimeter fence. Many of the comments are apparently from cat lovers.'If there had been cats there, they could have hunted the birds and prevented the plane crash,' said one.The channel has a history of rubbing cat lovers the wrong way by criticising cats for hunting birds for fun. In one video uploaded in January 2023, the bird-focused content creator included a scene where one of the wild cats killed a Eurasian scops owl, a protected species in South Korea, and urged cat advocates,'If you can’t take these stray cats home, please stop feeding them outdoors.' Jeju Air's Boeing 737-800 that departed Bankgok with 181 passengers and crew on board clashed at the Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province on Sunday. Only 2 survived.

Bird Flu Outbreak Forces Precautions in Eastern EnglandBird Flu Outbreak Forces Precautions in Eastern EnglandBird farms along England's east coast are implementing preventative measures against avian influenza following recent outbreaks of the virus. The UK's Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) confirmed new cases of bird flu in Norfolk and East Riding of Yorkshire last week. Defra has ordered the culling of infected birds and imposed a 3-kilometer protection zone around the Norfolk farm. Regional bird flu prevention zones are also in place across eastern England, including Lincolnshire and Suffolk, to curb the spread. Bird keepers in affected zones must now house their birds to protect them from the virus. The risk of bird flu infection among wild birds in Great Britain is now deemed 'high', while the risk to chicken farms is categorized as 'moderate to high'. Eleven cases of the H5N1 strain and one case of the H5N5 strain have been detected in England during the current outbreak. The first case was reported in November, and no confirmed cases have been reported in Scotland or Wales yet. According to the World Organisation for Animal Health, Great Britain is no longer free from HPAI. Between 2021 and 2023, the UK experienced its largest ever outbreak of bird flu due to the H5N1 strain, resulting in the death of 3.8 million birds and widespread transmission within wild bird populations.
