Bird farms along England's east coast are implementing preventative measures against avian influenza following recent outbreaks of the virus. The UK's Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) confirmed new cases of bird flu in Norfolk and East Riding of Yorkshire last week. Defra has ordered the culling of infected birds and imposed a 3-kilometer protection zone around the Norfolk farm. Regional bird flu prevention zones are also in place across eastern England, including Lincolnshire and Suffolk, to curb the spread. Bird keepers in affected zones must now house their birds to protect them from the virus. The risk of bird flu infection among wild birds in Great Britain is now deemed 'high', while the risk to chicken farms is categorized as 'moderate to high'. Eleven cases of the H5N1 strain and one case of the H5N5 strain have been detected in England during the current outbreak. The first case was reported in November, and no confirmed cases have been reported in Scotland or Wales yet. According to the World Organisation for Animal Health, Great Britain is no longer free from HPAI. Between 2021 and 2023, the UK experienced its largest ever outbreak of bird flu due to the H5N1 strain, resulting in the death of 3.8 million birds and widespread transmission within wild bird populations.
