A natural and fitting trip down racing’s “Highway” awaits powerhouse sprinter Zanardee’s Lane if he continues on his merry way at Monday’s feature Coffs Harbour meeting.
The lightly raced and locally trained five-year-old is back in action in the final race – Class 2 Hcp over 1205m – after reminding everyone what potential he offers in an arrogant Class 1 win at Grafton just 13 days ago.Jumping from a wide gate after being heavily backed, Zanardee’s Lane worked across to sit behind the speed before charging clear to win by nearly three lengths, and could have won by much further.
That made it two wins from three this prep after an emphatic first-up maiden scalp, and then unluckily missing narrowly at Taree in a CL2 on August 1. If he puts this lot to the sword under a career-high 61kg, Zanardee’s Lane is likely to head for a spring Saturday in Sydney in Highway company, although he could also target a feature Showcase sprint on Lismore Cup day on September 21.And, with that powerful burst of acceleration in his locker, he may even be aimed at a feature provincial or country carnival sprint further down the track.
He is likely to jump clear favourite in a full field at Coffs on Monday, with Adin Thompson maintaining the ride for local trainer Sally Taylor. From a middle gate this time, again he should park just off the speed and importantly off the inside, giving him room to get to the middle of the track and produce that customary powerful final sectional.Zanardee’s Lane is a big-striding son of Raphael’s Cat, and out of the modestly performed Easy Rocking mare Joy Division.
