Home to goat herds, dirt bike races and thousands of tourists, this tiny town’s big shared space reimagines an ancient concept
The annual Birdsville races attract thousands of visitors from out of town who need somewhere to sleep.for weeks at a time: sufficient shelter.
“This town was raised on goat milk and goat meat,” the Wangkangurru Yarluyandi elder says. “All these little outback towns were. Bedourie, Windorah, Boulia, Birdsville.” Don Rowlands, a Wangkangurru Yarluyandi elder and senior park ranger, who tells the story of Birdsville common’s history.“You’d be going about your business, but the goats would always be in your peripheral,” he says.
