PETALING JAYA: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia will not place a candidate for the Chini by-election scheduled to take place on July 4.
Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said the decision was made so support can be fully given to the candidate decided by Barisan Nasional to represent the Perikatan Nasional alliance now in government.
"The entire Bersatu election machinery will be mobilised to ensure a win for the Perikatan candidate," Hamzah said in a Facebook post Wednesday .Pakatan Harapan had earlier announced that it will not be contesting in the by-election in Pahang, citing the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic as its main concern.
The seat fell vacant after the incumbent, Datuk Seri Abu Bakar Harun, 60, from Barisan, died of a heart attack on May 6. In the 14th general election held in May 2018, Abu Bakar polled 10,027 votes to win the seat by a majority of 4,622 votes against PAS candidate Mohd Fadhil Noor Abdul Karim and PKR’s Mohamad Razali Ithnain .Applications for postal voting will close on June 18.
