PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has come up with a standard operating procedure (SOP) that will be enforced throughout the Chini by-election, held during the recovery movement control order (MCO) period.

Its chairman Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun said top of the list is abiding social distancing, the use of face masks and hand sanitisers and also taking the temperature of those involved in the by-election process.including at workers’ briefings, nomination process, printing and checking of ballot papers, ballot counting and during ballot box inspections.

Azhar said the process of handing over nomination papers will be as per usual practice but candidates will no longer be allowed to have a procession to the nomination centre along with their supporters.“To minimise gatherings and the risk of Covid-19 infection, the same SOP is to be adhered to by the candidate at the official counting centre. The EC will work closely with the police to ensure that SOP is followed, ” said Azhar.

“Instead, candidates can maximise campaign methods via social media and the EC monitoring team will be on the lookout for the campaign activities to be carried out by the candidates, ” he said.
