Two developers contacted the city of Emeryville expressing interest in converting the building into housing.

The eight-story tower at 6001 Shellmound St. is adjacent to the Emeryville Public Market, which is being redeveloped by Oxford Properties and AvalonBay. The two developers have expressed to the city of Emeryville that they are interested in converting the building into residential units, theOxford Properties owns the retail space on the building's first floor along with a development partner, according to the Business Times.

Oxford Properties and AvalonBay contacted the city of Emeryville in May to ask about the process of converting the building into housing, Emeryville city planner Miroo Desai told the Business Times. “We need housing,” Desai told the Business Times. “I hope it happens, because it will show a different way of doing things. I mean, the city is all behind it. Now is really for the developers to make a deal.”

The building, currently called The Offices at Public Market, houses a nail salon and dentist's office on its first floor. It was built in 1988 and sits at about 109,000 square feet.
