FILE - The John L. Burton California Democratic Party Headquarters is seen in Sacramento, Calif., Friday, July 16, 2021.A Northern District of California judge sentenced two California men to federal prison on Wednesday after both pleaded guilty and agreed to separate plea deals for their participation in a plot to firebomb the California Democratic Party headquarters.
Napa resident Ian Benjamin Rogers, 46, and Vallejo resident Jarrod Copeland, 39, were sentenced to 9 years and 4.5 years, respectively, for conspiring to destroy the John L. Burton building in Sacramento, according to a press release. As part of their plea deals, Rogers and Copeland admitted that after the 2020 presidential election — which they believed at the time was rigged against then-President Donald Trump — they planned to toss cans of gasoline into the state's Democratic Party headquarters to burn down the building. Rogers and Copeland wrote in encrypted messages to each other that they wanted to wait until after President Joe Biden's inauguration on Jan. 20, 2021, to carry out their attack.
Rogers' home and business were raided on Jan. 15, 2021, where officers found"a cache of weapons, including 45 to 50 firearms, thousands of rounds of ammunition, and five pipe bombs,"“The defendants in this case admitted that they intended to destroy the headquarters of a political organization by firebombing it,” said U.S. Attorney Stephanie Hinds.
U.S. District Judge Charles E. Breyer accepted the plea deals for both men because he felt they expressed remorse and ultimately took responsibility for their actions,
