While the actor and model said she found community in being labeled a plus-size model early in her career, she now thinks separating skinnier models and larger models is a form of “othering” that just doesn't make sense.Barbie said she wants to normalize the idea that people of all sizes are similarly beautiful — something that absolutely should be normal by now.

“Because I’m bigger, I get asked about body positivity in everything I do, which is redundant. It’s not helping to normalize things," she said. “Stepping into a career that has historically had rigid standards of beauty, people definitely projected me as this body-positive activist and I owned that in the beginning. But over the years, I’ve found my own version of that, where it’s not just about size. Now I’m kind of more like, ‘Let’s just shake this whole thing up.

“At the beginning, it was a good way for me to identify a community and if we didn’t have [those] labels, it would [have felt] very lonely,” she said about being called a plus-size model. “I didn’t feel anything towards [those labels] until I was years into it and I was like, ‘OK, we’re still kind of “othering” all these beautiful models.’ This is something I want to reject.”

Like Barbie mentioned, labels can be immensely helpful for some, and can provide a sense of community. But as she goes on to explain, they also can create an idea that somehow those being labeled are different from others.
