Baguio Bishop Victor Bendico has expressed support for the No Meat Friday campaign to help promote a healthier diet and as a form of sacrifice this Lenten season.

Bishop Bendico said avoiding or lessening the consumption of meat has a lot of health benefits. The younger generation, the Church leader observed, consumes a lot of meat and as a result become prone to many health issues.

“It seems like many have become carnivorous, particularly the young. This has led to many health problems like heart attacks which happen during the mid-years of life. That is why I support the No Meat Friday campaign for health reasons. Excessive meat consumption can destroy our internal organs and may lead to a lot of illnesses,” said Bishop Bendico over Radio Veritas.

The prelate, who also serves as the chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines—Episcopal Commission on Liturgy, encourages the faithful to observe meatless Fridays this Lent and to help promote the consumption of fruits and vegetables. Apostolic Vicariate of Taytay, Palawan Bishop Broderick Pabillo, earlier, expressed support for the No Meat Friday campaign which is also being promoted by Radio Veritas since 2011 to help combat climate change.
