Retired Major General Gus McLachlan says the new Defence Strategic Review will move Australia away from the “tired notion of defence”, instead focusing on “impactful projection” against potential adversary nations.
“One of the first things that we’re moving away from is this tired notion of defence of Australia,” Mr McLachlan told Sky News Australia.
“We were expected to be able to defend Australia effectively from our beaches and the reality of long-range missiles in potential adversary nations is that the range is such that you simply can’t do that anymore. “We have a new strategy that allows us to talk about defending our nation well-forward of our shores and I like the term impactful projection.”
