Millions across Asia celebrate the Lunar New Year, marking the end of the Year of the Dragon and the beginning of the Year of the Snake with family gatherings, traditional rituals, and vibrant festivities.
Hundreds of millions of people across Asia celebrated the Lunar New Year with their families on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, bidding farewell to the Year of the Dragon and ushering in the Year of the Snake. In China, the celebration spanned eight consecutive public holidays for the Spring Festival, a period characterized by shared meals, traditional performances, and vibrant displays of firecrackers and fireworks.
Train stations and airports nationwide were teeming with passengers as millions embarked on an annual journey to reunite with loved ones, creating what is anticipated to be a record-breaking migration. High streets, shopping malls, offices, and homes throughout East and South-East Asia, including South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand, were adorned with festive red banners, believed to ward off evil spirits. In Taiwan, temples witnessed a surge in worshippers of all ages on the morning of January 29, paying homage with offerings of fruit, sweets, crackers, and nuts, and engaging in meditation and prayer. Ms. Chen Ching-yuan, 36, shared her family's tradition of visiting the Longshan Temple in Taipei, stating, “Our tradition is to visit the temple and pray for better fortune for this year.” She emphasized the simple desire for a year filled with smoothness, peace, safety, and good health. Lin Yu-soon, 73, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the spiritual solace found in temple visits and communal prayer. Some devotees sought good fortune through a unique competition, racing to be the first to release incense at the stroke of midnight. Kao Meng-shun, after securing victory at Fusing Temple in Yunlin County, expressed his youthful determination to seize opportunities and make the most of life. The 2025 Lunar New Year holiday period in mainland China is projected to witness an astounding nine billion interprovincial passenger trips across all modes of transportation.
