Tom Slick, founder of the Texas Biomedical Research Institute, enlisted the aid of his sister Betty Moorman to sign up charter members of the Argyle Club, which supports the nonprofit foundation.SAN ANTONIO — “It’s crazy what is intact in Alamo Heights,” architect Don McDonald said during a history presentation this week at the Argyle Club, held near the conclusion of the municipality’s centennial celebration.
McDonald traced an eclectic mix of architectural styles — each enjoying a fashion from the early 1900s to the mid-20th century — from English country house to Italianate, Spanish colonial and Arts and Crafts to the ranch house and midcentury modern.
He lived there — collecting books and writing epic poetry and economic treatises — from around the time of the Civil War until he sold it to the Chamberlain Investment Co. of Denver, a land developer that formed the Alamo Heights Land and Improvement Co. It was the first to plat the property for smaller, residential lots. The company kept the former McLane/Anderson house and turned it into an inn — needed since the area was 4 or 5 miles from the center of San Antonio.
An innkeeping pair of siblings from Boerne, Bob and Alice O’Grady, took over the Argyle’s management and bought it outright in 1906, as the investment company was fizzling out. That began a golden age for the hotel, which became a beloved eatery/event venue and even a home away from home for Army officers, accommodating semipermanent boarders as well as occasional travelers in the added stories, wings and porches with a style that leaned hard on the O’Grady’s Southern hospitality branding.
