Research firm Omdia pegs the Apple Vision Pro's material cost as slightly over US$1,500, with the rest going into R&D, assembly and margins.
The Apple Vision Pro famously launched with a massive starting price tag of US$3,499. But have you wondered what it costs to build the headset? Research firm Omdia has, putting the 'bill of materials' at US$1,542 .
Breaking down the material cost of the Apple Vision Pro, the 1.25-inch Micro OLED display for each eye from Sony is listed at US$228 each. These would make them the most expensive components of the headset, coming up to US$456, just under a third of the listed material cost.Next in the component costs list of the Apple Vision Pro are the M2 and R1 chips, which are noted to be 'the second expensive part' in the headset. These are priced at US$240, according to the breakdown.
Of course, just listing out the prices of the components doesn't really paint the full picture of the Apple Vision Pro's price. The materials make up of about a third of the headset's price tag, though the rest of the cost would go into things like R&D, assembly, packaging and distribution, not to mention profit margin. Unfortunately, Omdia's breakdown does not go into those details.
