Pet owners around the country are facing difficult choices as the rising cost of living leaves them choosing between their own needs and those of their four-legged friends, as cruelty reports spike.
Rising cruelty rates, surrenders
A program which the organisation's NSW arm runs to help people keep their animals in times of crisis, as well as giving them vet care, has seen a 350 per cent increase in demand over the last year. Ms Robinson said surrenders had a flow on effect both for owners who are giving up their pets, as well as staff who were taking them in.The Cat Haven recently ran a program to sterilise 200 cats from low income owners for free, thanks to a government grant.
"It's an increasing service, and there's only so much we can do with a very small on-site clinic and limited staffing, and limited funding as well."962 cats desexed and microchipped for free, with hopes to reach 2000.300 animals microchipped for free across five days, and partnering with councils for subsidised desexing.1,200 animals given health checks, vaccinations, food and enrichment through 42 outreach events.
