ANAHEIM ― Gerardo Reyes was not on the fast track to the big leagues until the Angels started taking the whole “fast track” thing literally.
The Angels were expected to learn Joyce’s MRI results during their Saturday night game against the Seattle Mariners. The rookie pitcher left Friday’s game after experiencingJoyce, the Angels’ third-round draft pick a year ago, had allowed two runs in five appearances after earning his first big-league promotion. He was throwing the second-fastest average fastball in the gameSpeed is not incidental to Reyes’ story, either.
Reyes split spring training between the Angels’ camp and the WBC, in which Reyes helped Mexico make a surprising run into the semifinals. He started the Triple-A regular season slowly, with a 10.29 ERA after seven games. “At the end of the day has been throwing the best of the relievers down there in Triple-A right now. This was the time to grab him.”
