In response to a request for more clarification regarding the release of body camera footage detailing the fatal shooting of Kris Handy, the Anchorage Police Department released a statement to Anchorage Assembly members.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - In response to a request for more clarification regarding the release of body camera footage detailing theAnchorage Police Chief Designee Bianca Cross stated in her letter to Assembly Vice Chair Meg Zaletel, dated May 24, that her decision to not release the footage until the end of the investigation was “based upon the need to protect the integrity of the investigation,” and was consistent with the State of Alaska Department of Law protocol.

Handy was shot shortly after 2:30 a.m. on May 13 outside of the apartment on Bearfoot Drive, which he shared with his fiancée Harmony Stitt and their children, who were present at the time of the shooting. “I am requesting that APD provide the Assembly in writing by the week’s end, Friday, May 24, APD’s response to the call to release the footage, especially now that other footage of the incident has been made public…Finally, if it is APD’s continued position to release the footage at the end of the investigation, clarity on exactly what constitutes the end of the investigation is also requested.”
