As family and supporters of the late Kris Handy plan a rally this weekend to continue calls for Anchorage Police Department body camera footage to be released, Handy’s fiancée is describing the mental health crisis she says preceded the fatal shooting.

, Handy’s fiancée is telling her side of the story of what led up to police’s shooting of the 34-year-old.

“He started taking a new medication to help him with his depression. He started trying to do over-the-phone counseling,” Stitt said. Stitt said she increasingly became worried Handy would hurt himself after he got out one of his guns, even though she didn’t think it would work after the removal of the firing pin.

“He said, ‘Give me a kiss.’ I gave him a kiss and I said, ‘Please honey, they’re just going to take you in. Just put this down,’” Stitt said.
