Anthony Albanese stood alongside United States President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to reveal the details of the nuclear-powered submarine deal, with one directly referencing China's 'assertiveness' in the Indo-Pacific.
The boats will be based on a British design and are set to be built in Adelaide, with the first to be completed in just under two decades, around 2042.
US submarines will also begin visiting Australia's ports this year amid rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific. The first steps will cost about $9 billion over the next four years, which includes $2 billion for infrastructure in Adelaide and $1 billion to expand Perth's naval base. The Labor leader said the multibillion-dollar package will provide"transformative opportunities" for jobs, kills, research and innovation, in Australia and the US.
