Rishi Sunak has met with Anthony Albanese in San Diego to discuss Australia-United Kingdom relations ahead of an announcement on the nuclear submarines being acquired through AUKUS.
Mr Sunak will join with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese and United States President Joe Biden in San Diego on Tuesday morning AEDT to announce the nuclear submarines Australia will be acquiring through AUKUS.
Mr Albanese responded that"tomorrow will be a very big day" as he acknowledged AUKUS - announced by Mr Biden and then prime ministers Scott Morrison and Boris Johnson in September 2021 -"has been a lot of hard work". "The sum of the three is more than one plus one plus one in this case. And I think that the cooperation we've had is really exciting," Mr Albanese said.
Mr Sunak said while the Pacific was not geographically close, the United Kingdom had an important role to play in maintaining peace and stability in the region. "It's important in a way to demonstrate our commitment to the values that we hold dear as countries."
