A recent fire aboard an Air Busan aircraft at Gimhae International Airport is suspected to have originated from a passenger's power bank. The incident resulted in seven injuries and the evacuation of all passengers and crew.
An Air Busan aircraft that caught fire at Gimhae International Airport on Tuesday is believed to have originated from a passenger's power bank. The incident, which injured seven passengers, is thought to have started from a power bank stored in the overhead luggage compartment. Local media reports, citing internal sources from the airline, stated that the fire began to spread from the rear of the cabin before the aircraft took off for Hong Kong.
According to the South Korean Ministry of Transport, 169 passengers and seven crew members were successfully evacuated through emergency slides. The blaze ravaged nearly half the fuselage of the Airbus A321, however, the wings and engines on both sides are reported to have sustained no serious damage. Images circulating on social media show extensive damage to the top of the aircraft with large holes visible in the fuselage due to the fire. Local newspapers reported that the fire might have occurred after the passenger's power bank experienced pressure while stored in the cabin luggage compartment. The incident took place only a month after the tragic crash of a Jeju Air aircraft at Muan International Airport on December 29th, which claimed the lives of 179 out of 181 passengers. As of now, South Korean authorities are still investigating the incident to determine the exact cause of the fire.
