Business owners in Lismore say there have been pockets of progress, but the overall pace of recovery in the flood damaged town is slow.

In the 12 months since his South Lismore brewery was destroyed by floodwater, Andrew Newton has managed to reopen and brew two batches of beer but is struggling to find staff and customers.in the northern NSW city, local business owners say there have been pockets of progress, but it’s a slow road to the full recovery needed to revitalise Lismore’s economy and bring visitors back to the area.

The beer maker received a grant of $50,000, but Newton estimates the costs, including damaged brewing equipment and lost revenue, are close to $500,000, setting the business back two years financially. “By all accounts, everyone experiences a surge when they first open because everyone is so happy to see them open. But, especially since Christmas, some days are really good and other days are quite patchy,” she says.

“I’m very mindful that the more stuff I have in my shop, the more stuff there is to pack up,” Kronen says.
