A controversial study claiming mask mandates turned around the pandemic during the height of Melbourne’s lockdowns has been slapped with a formal expression of concern notice after scientific sleuths revealed several questionable claims.

The researchers counted the number of people wearing masks in the photos and used that as the basis of the claim that 98 per cent of people had followed the mandate.New cases peaked about two weeks after the mask mandate was introduced. “The key finding from this study is that masks work,” Burnet Institute deputy director Professor Margaret Hellard said after the study was published inIndependent researchers almost immediately raised concerns about the study’s methods.
