Irish people have a long history of success at the Academy Awards
The 96th Academy Awards takes place this weekend and it could prove to be a historic night for Ireland.
Meanwhile Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe, the Dublin duo behind Irish production company Element Pictures, could take home the coveted Best Picture statue for their film Poor Things, while Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan is also nominated for his work on the Emma Stone-led film. He began working in film in 1915 and would go on to become one of 36 founding members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Barry Fitzgerald The first Irishman to win an Oscar for acting was Portobello native Barry Fitzgerald, who had the unique honour of earning Oscar nominations in both the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor categories for the same role, making him the only performer to be recognised in such a way. She soon made the move into films and would go on to earn six Oscar nominations, winning twice for Bram Stoker's Dracula and Quest for Fire.
The 66-year-old now-retired actor, who lives in Wicklow, picked up his first Oscar for his performance as Irish writer and painter Christy Brown in Jim Sheridan's 1989 drama My Left Foot, and would go on to win again in 2007 for There Will Be Blood and in 2012 for Lincoln. Born in Sligo and raised in Dublin, Jordan earned two Oscar nominations for his 1993 drama The Crying Game, taking home the award for Best Original Screenplay.
The short film was shot in Killough, Co Down, where most of the George family live, and stars Irish actors Ciarán Hinds and Conleth Hill. It tells the story of a man who emigrated to America 25 years ago to escape the Troubles and is now bringing his daughter back to meet his childhood friends, while harbouring a dark secret.
Richard Baneham Dublin-born VFX Supervisor Richard Baneham won his first Oscar for Best Achievement in Visual Effects for his ground breaking work on James Cameron's 2010 box-office hit Avatar.
