The 49ers called up Tre Swilling from the practice squad and placed fellow cornerback Sam Womack on Injured Reserve ahead of Sunday’s game at the Los Angeles Rams.
SANTA CLARA — Cornerback Tre Swilling could make his NFL debut Sunday for the 49ers, some 32 years after his father, Pat, won NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors. He joined the 49ers’ practice squad last December for a week, and he spent training camp and the preseason battling for a reserve job. The Georgia Tech product entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie in May 2022 with the Tennessee Titans, then spent a month last season on the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad.
His father, Pat, was a former star linebacker and the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 1991 with the Detroit Lions, before finishing his career on the Oakland Raiders. In a corresponding roster move, the 49ers put cornerback Sam Womack III on Injured Reserve, with the intention of being activated after October, because of a knee injury. Womack sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee on the final snap of Wednesday’s practice. All nine of his snaps in the season opener were on special teams, and he was the 49ers’ only player requiring a game-status projection in Friday’s injury report.
In other cornerback news, Deommodore Lenoir got fined $5,618 for his unnecessary roughness hit on Najee Harris on the Steelers’ lone touchdown drive Sunday. Also, rookie cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. will remain on the Physically Unable To Perform list into Weeks 5 or 6, coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday.
The Rams’ transactions Saturday involved the activations of running back Royce Freeman and wide receiver Austin Trammell from the practice squad. Listed as questionable for Sunday’s game are last week’s leading receiver, Puka Nacua , along with linebacker Ernest Jones , center Coleman Shelton and Russ Yeast .
