Disney's recent villains are very different from their classics—and the change was necessary at first—but it may be time to revert to true villainy.

Disney's more recent movies, especially within the Disney Princess franchise, have changed their villain formula—and it's time they changed it back. Over the years, the classic villains have developed a fan base all their own. Nearly as beloved as their correlating protagonists, baddies like Scar from the Lion King, Cruella Deville from 101 Dalmations, and Ursula from The Little Mermaid have become iconic.

They often have some kind of familial relationship with the central protagonist, which makes their desire to murder and destroy their enemies all the more despicable. This goes back to Snow White and Cinderella and the 'evil stepmother' archetype.

3 Recent Disney Movies Have Lost The Fight Between Good & Evil Classic Disney movies follow the 'hero's journey' template, which strongly depends on the fight between good and evil. This means a very black-and-white story. The good guys always do the right thing , and the villain is easy to identify and want nothing more than to achieve their wicked goals.

The problem is the redeemable villain character has now become the predictable one. Raya and the Last Dragon's villain Namaari may have killed Sisu, but it was always clear that she and Raya would mend their ways. Abuela may have been easy to hate in Encanto, but there was no suspense over whether or not her family would forgive her . Overall, audiences have begun to expect redemption, which is a sign that it's time to switch things back up again.
