Unused sci-fi creature designs that didn’t work.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Unused concept art isn't a rare occurrence in the sci-fi industry due to extensive number of creature designs, but some of them were avoided for a reason, and those decisions saved the movies. Many film artists create character and monster designs to visualize their appearance on the screen and determine whether they're effective enough for the plot.
10 Heptapod - Arrival The first design of the Heptapods in Arrival is more timid compared to the others, but the clear, almost cute visual of this creature would make the movie less mysterious and intriguing. Arrival follows Louise Banks , a linguist determined to communicate with the new alien species that have landed on Earth. In this sci-fi thriller, Louise regularly enters the gigantic pod in which the aliens reside, but they only appear behind a mystified screen.
6 Jar Jar Binks - Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace Jar Jar Binks looked more horrifying in his early designs, but they were thankfully scrapped during production of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. Concept art often depicted Jar Jar with a dog-like companion called Blarf, and although this could work for other sci-movies with a comedic nature, Jar Jar just isn't meant to have a pet because he can't look after himself.
3 Thing - The Thing The Thing is a classic movie that blends horror and sci-fi together seamlessly through intense practical gore and surprising twists. Being an organism that can imitate any life form, whether that be a dog or a human, the Thing is a hidden threat that makes the survivors paranoid about being infected. However, the original version of this creature was going to be more alien-like, with spindly legs and a curved, black head that held huge, white eyes.
