National Laureate Datuk Lat emphasizes the importance of continued artistic creation, preserving local identity in art, and the government's role in supporting the creative industry, while celebrating National Artiste Day.

IPOH, March 22 Local art practitioners should maintain their creative endeavors with discipline and stay actively involved even after retirement to ensure the enduring relevance of the art industry, according to National Laureate Datuk Mohammad Nor Mohammad Khalid, widely known as Datuk Lat . He emphasized that the genuine satisfaction of an artist is derived from the continuous pursuit of creative work, and the drive to create should not be extinguished by retirement.

“I hope art practitioners in any field do not isolate themselves, but instead continue striving and creating. Even though I have retired, I still draw and am currently working on a new comic. We must always have something to do, if not in the studio or office, then at home,” he elaborated during an interview with Bernama today. Lat shared these insights while reflecting on National Artiste Day, which is observed on March 22 to honor the significant contributions of local art figures in advancing the nation’s creative industry. He pointed out that the increased attention given to the creative industry by the government has enabled the public to better appreciate and engage with artistic works. “Even in the past, we appreciated artists, but now there is greater attention from the government, allowing the public to enjoy and understand local art more deeply,” he explained. Furthermore, he highlighted the paramount importance of preserving local identity in artistic creations to ensure their enduring value. He cited the enduring popularity of works by icons such as the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee, which he attributed to their strong sense of national identity. “Art forms such as Malay pop music have their own identity, which is why they endure. If we simply follow Western styles, our works will easily change and be forgotten. Art practitioners must continue creating and develop their own style, even if at the early stages they are influenced by others before expressing their own identity,” he stated. National Artiste Day is celebrated annually in conjunction with the birth anniversary of the late P. Ramlee. The celebrations are typically marked by modest programmes that commemorate his contributions, simultaneously bringing together members of the creative industry. The emphasis remains on fostering an environment that encourages sustained artistic output and the development of distinctive artistic voices. This commitment underscores the crucial role art plays in reflecting and shaping national identity, culture, and heritage. Lat’s perspective reflects a deep understanding of the artist's journey and the challenges and rewards inherent in a life dedicated to creative expression. His advice is particularly relevant in an era where globalization can sometimes overshadow the importance of cultural specificity. He urges art practitioners to remain steadfast in their commitment, develop their own unique styles, and contribute to the ongoing evolution of the Malaysian art scene. The commitment of local artists, as highlighted by Datuk Lat, underscores the critical role the creative industry plays in preserving and promoting the nation’s cultural heritage. These artistic endeavors not only reflect a nation's identity but also shape its collective consciousness and serve as a source of inspiration and enjoyment for generations to come. The emphasis on fostering creativity, coupled with celebrating the achievements of artistic figures like P. Ramlee, underlines the vital link between art, culture, and national identity. The consistent production of art rooted in local identity serves as a powerful testament to the nation's rich and multifaceted cultural landscape. By continuing to support and recognize the contributions of artists, the nation ensures the continued vibrancy and relevance of the creative sector. This sustained appreciation for art and its creators underscores the importance of nurturing a cultural environment that values creativity and artistic expression
