The Mouratoglou Academy, in collaboration with Epsom College Malaysia, is nurturing young tennis talents by providing a holistic environment that combines rigorous training with academic excellence. The academy aims to cultivate professional tennis players while ensuring their well-being and character development.
The young players, demonstrating remarkable professionalism, are part of over 40 boys and girls from various countries, aged seven to seventeen, attending tennis training at the Mouratoglou Academy . This academy, founded by Patrick Mouratoglou, a world-renowned coach who has trained tennis legends like Serena Williams, has chosen Epsom College Malaysia as its hub for tennis and education in Asia, with the goal of developing professional tennis players.
During a recent visit, Patrick emphasized that the collaboration between his academy and the college stems from the belief that young athletes should not have to choose between sports and education. He highlighted that Epsom's strong academic foundation, boarding traditions, and robust pastoral support provide an environment that can accommodate both sporting and educational ambitions equally. The academy and Epsom offer a holistic atmosphere where athletes can compete, learn, and grow as leaders, supported by a community that values performance, well-being, and character in equal measure. This approach, he noted, has been central to the academy's philosophy since its inception in 1996, with a commitment to providing the best for these children, ensuring they have all the necessary resources. Mouratoglou made these remarks during the launch of the academy and a RM1 million scholarship initiative, aimed at supporting promising players across the region and strengthening Malaysia's path toward the 2027 SEA Games. Additionally, he introduced Johan Van Herck, former captain of the Belgian Davis Cup team, as the academy's new Technical Director. \He further explained that sports and competition instill discipline in children while building their character as they face challenges. Children who are active in sports learn to react effectively in difficult situations and learn from losses. He believes this is more impactful than simply telling children they need to be strong. Sports teach them to confront challenges daily and learn from mistakes. Mouratoglou emphasized the importance of integrating education and sports, as it provides the best opportunities for children's development. He noted that there is a significant difference between those who participate in sports and those who do not, particularly in terms of character development and the values instilled. In sports, these values must be practiced daily, as the environment forces one to do so. He encouraged parents to support their children's involvement in sports, emphasizing that passion is the key driver of success. It's not just talent, but the ability to control mental and behavioral aspects that need to be cultivated in children. All these qualities enable them to apply these lessons in their daily lives. Sports educate children to focus more on learning, even when not on the court. Mouratoglou stated that the academy applies the same training methods used in its academies in Paris and Dubai to develop future tennis champions. The academy differentiates itself from others through its high-quality coaching staff, with Yohan playing a key role in developing young players into professionals in the region. The tennis program at the school began in 2022 with nine children and three coaches, and has now grown to 42 players with 11 coaches. Students continue to come from various places. \The activities at the academy reflect a growing ecosystem, including 24 tournaments annually, such as the Asian Federation Tennis (ATF) Junior U14 Southeast Asia Grade A Round, held on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) certified Epsom courts. Meanwhile, the school principal, Avis Parker, mentioned that students are drawn to the college because, in addition to academics, they can learn tennis, football, or golf. He emphasized the importance of a balanced curriculum in the academy and tennis program. He stated that students who participate in 20 hours of training per week are not overburdened, as the academy works to support them and provide space for their training. They also ensure that students study core subjects and subjects they are interested in. Akil Adibi Rahiman, 16, is a product of the Mouratoglou Academy and has represented the country in several international tennis tournaments. He joined Epsom in February 2024 to participate in the academy. He expressed that the academy and tennis go hand in hand at Epsom
