SIBU: The Sibu division is setting its sights on entering the Malaysia Book of Records for having the most powerboats in a single event, namely the Sibu International Powerboat Race 2026. Sibu Resident Abang Mohammad Porkan said the ambitious target reflects the organisers’ commitment to elevating the status of the annual event while restoring the prominence of the Rajang River .
He revealed that so far, a total of 224 boats have registered to participate across nine race categories, drawing competitors from throughout Sarawak as well as international participants, including from Brunei. "This figure has exceeded the minimum requirement of 200 boats, which means we have unofficially qualified to the Malaysia Book of Records," he said at a press conference here on Monday . He added that an official recognition certificate is expected to be presented during the closing ceremony on April 26, subject to final confirmation by the organising body. Abang Mohammad noted that the achievement would not only mark a milestone for the Sibu International Powerboat Race but also position Sibu as a vibrant hub for water sports and tourism in the region. "This year’s theme, ‘D’Awakening of the Mighty Rajang River’, symbolises our continuous efforts to revive the glory of the river as the lifeblood, economic driver and heritage of the Sibu community," he added. The race is organised by the Sibu Divisional Tourism Task Group , with financial support from Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof and the state Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Ministry.PM shows keen interest in defence tech during DSA and Natsec Asia walkaboutSabah faces autism care gap with only 18 centres for over 7,000 children
